About

Clean Water Not Dirty Drilling is a network of organizations that was established in 2010 to safeguard New York’s water, natural resources, public health, and communities from the dangers of irresponsible, poorly regulated, and under-inspected gas development.

CleanWaterNotDirtyDrilling.org is a resource for news and information about the negative impacts of industrial gas drilling, including by means of proposed, new high volume horizontal hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.” As the home of the New York Water Rangers Campaign, the site provides resources and tools for citizens interested in speaking up and taking action to protect their families and our shared environment from fracking’s dangers.

Our elected officials, including Governor Andrew Cuomo, state lawmakers, and agency officials at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, are making key decisions about fracking right now.

The Water Rangers thinks these leaders should serve the interests of New Yorkers, not oil and gas companies. We think that if fracking is allowed in New York, the gas industry should be forced to follow the most stringent and comprehensive standards and be required by law to play by the same rules as every other industry. Drillers must also be held accountable for any pollution and damage they cause.

Governor Cuomo and other officials have said repeatedly that science will be the basis for New York’s final decision on fracking. Working together, our organizations will make sure state leaders keep their word.

The network was established by Catskill Mountainkeeper, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Earthjustice, Earthworks Oil & Gas Accountability Project, Environmental Advocates of New York, Natural Resources Defense Council, and Riverkeeper. Additional network partners include the Catskill Center for Conservation & Development, Environment New York, Fleased, and Otsego 2000.

By joining the New York Water Rangers Campaign and the Clean Water Not Dirty Drilling network, organizations help strengthen the reach and impact of our collective efforts to protect the state from fracking and ensure government responsibility and corporate accountability to all New Yorkers.
